For this project, I wanted to experiment with the concept of going 3 dimensional. I did this through my choice of medium. This project was the most difficult as well as methodical. I first started with the "bones" of the structure, and created a form using a thick paper called bristol. I then used plaster strips and covered the entire form. This ensured a hard surface for the groundwork. Once the plaster strips completely dried, I then went in and covered the form in its entirety with joint compound. Once that layer dried, I sanded it down to a smooth texture, and flocked either side with a dark forest green.

The overall intent for this project was to abandon all thoughts of functionality. This is due to my inspiration of an artist by the name of Stephen Antonson. He works with plaster, and created many dysfunctional furniture pieces. They are completely beautiful to look at, and the over idea is presented right there. He creates pieces which look like something, but in fact are quite the opposite and are fragile. That was my intent with my project, for that I wanted to abandon the stigma surrounding functionality.

Drawing on Objects

Artist Statement: For my piece, I chose to buy a fish tank. The purpose of this was to completely redefine the object to make it completely unrecognizable. I did this through flocking all sides of the tank with a forest green flock. I then proceeded to use mirror spray paint on the base of the tank. This created the scene for what I was going to insert in the tank. I was heavily inspired by a piece done by Max Hooper Schneider, for that he reconstructed a fish tank as well. However, I wanted mine to have the feel of a landscape but compressed in the tank itself. I created geometrical shapes with foam, and used joint compound to cover them. The geometrical shapes represented the landscape itself.

Transformative drawing

Artist Statement: For my transformation drawings, I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone, and be able to experiment with different types of medium. In the first week, I chose to experiment with chalk. The abstraction along with the choice of colors inspired me to draw on a larger scale. The second week I used black and red acrylic paint. I was heavily inspired by scientific studies such as the amoeba. The week after that I covered the piece with spray paint gesso, giving the surface a rough texture, and began to use emerald green ink. I have inspired by linguistic relativity and wanted that to show. As I began to get tired of 2D surfaces, I chose to cut it. Organic shapes are shown weekly in my drawings, and it is visibly in my choice of shapes that I cut, and stack on top of each other. The last week, I cut them up again, and weaved them back together. I was inspired by one of my classmates pieces, for that she is very into weaving and textiles.
